What to look for when choosing a contractor

Trade Organisations

Many types of service now need to be a member of a trade organisation to carry-out their trade, such as electricians. If you employ one who is not, you might be breaking the law and could be fined up to £5000, and not be able to claim on your insurance.

To find out the laws concerning electrical work, please see our page on the left called Electrical work & the law, this will help you further. When you need to find out if a contractor has to be a member of an organisation, get intouch with the trade organisation concerning the trade you require or contact your local building control officer of your local council, or trading standards.

Questions you should be thinking of before employing a contractor

        1. Are they who they say they are, and will you be able to contact them at a later date

        2. Do they have all the relevant qualifications to complete the work you require

        3. Are they a member of a trade organisation that they need to be a member of

        4. Are they insured incase you need to make a claim if there should be a problem

        5. Have they given you a contract, or a written estimate or quote for the work you want

        6. Do you know their terms & conditions for completing the work you require

        7. Can I cancel the work if I change my mind, what are my legal rights

        8. Will you be getting any certificates for the work from this company and will this cost extra

Always check out the Company

  • Check to see if they belong to a trade organisation many trades must belong to one nowdays

  • Check their membership number is a valid one, all members have an id number

  • Phone up their organisation and check, the number will be in the phone book

  • Check to see they have public liability insurance, you wont be able to make a claim if they dont

  • Check the date on the policy is valid and it's value is able to cover any future problem

  • Always obtain a valid contact address & telephone number and check it exists.

Contracts & paperwork

  • Always obtain a contract stating the details of what is being done or a written estimate or quote

  • Ask what the company's terms & conditions are before work starts,

  • Always obtain written information on what is being charged and or a price for the work

  • Agree in writing all or any additions or alterations to a contract or estimate before they are done

  • Ask what their terms & conditions are before work starts, you might not agree with them after

  • Everyone has 7 days in which they can change their mind, some instances maybe different

  • Always get a receipt on completion of the work and for any payments made

  • In the case of electricians we must issue a certificate for all work completed

Recommendations

Many company's show you written recommendations from happy clients, these could be written by themselves and not be true recommendations. They could also show you photo's of previous work, this again could be photo's of someone elses work, always check the information out.

The best recommendation you can get for employing a trades person, is from a friend, a collegue or family, someone who has used the service before. It should be known however everyone is different, what others maybe happy with you might not be.

The price of the work

The price of the work you want completed should always be, value for money and a fair price to the contractor and the customer. Do not go by the prices you hear on the TV DIY shows, those programs are usually 2 years old, and prices have probably of gone up.

Before employing a contractor do some research on prices, there are usually 3 types of prices. The right price is usually what most contractors are charging for that type of work, if it's higher than most they are probably over charginging. If it's alot lower than most, they will probably tell you there will be extra charges later, they are going in with a lower price just to get the work.

What you should always remember is this, you get what you pay for. If you want quality workmanship you have to pay a higher price for it, if you want a cheap job expect cheap materials and possibly work done by a un-qualified contractor. Whatever price you pay for your work, it should be a price you are happy to pay and feel you had value for money.
